See Ya' Down The Road

Who Turns On The Light?

First, I have always been a night-owl and I always will be. During high school my usual bedtime was 1:00 a.m. or later because I had too many activities and didn't want to waste my time sleeping. In the Air Force I was assigned to 6:00 p.m. to midnight during many months of schooling which meat eating breakfast at 1:00 a.m. and getting to bed at 3:00 a.m. I usually got up for roll-call at 9:00 a.m. and sometimes went back to bed.

Much of my IBM career was spent on second shift and I often worked most of the night and slept until late morning. I went for over 15 years without setting an alarm clock to wake me up and when I woke up, no matter what the time, that is when I crawled out of bed. The prime time for my brain to be working 100% started late evening and hit prime about 10:00 p.m. and last until 2:00 p.m. when it started slowing down.

Since I retired in 1999 and started fulltiming there has been no reason to set an alarm so I can rise when I wake up, eat when I get hungry and go to bed when I get sleepy. My brain is still centered to hit prime around 10:00 p.m. and I think that will never change.

I know the President has the "Red Button" to hit for national emergencies and I always thought someone was in charge of the Light Switch. I knew it would not be a Cabinet position, but I thought the switch would be controlled by the government since it is such an important job.

I though someone switched on the sun to bring daylight to the Earth until one morning when I was up early and noticed it was getting brighter and brighter. I asked what was happening and someone told me it was a sunrise. A sunrise? Heck, that blew my whole theory about someone controlling the switch to turn on the light each day.

Since then I have seen the phenomenon called sunrise several times, but I still think it would be best if someone controlled the switch.
