See Ya' Down The Road

That Was Easy

Staples, the office supply company, recently launched an advertising program with an Easy button. They say it is easy to order from Staples and they can fill anyone's office supply needs. Friends and soon to be fulltimers, Mike and Nancy Chiarolla, gave us an Easy button and it proudly sits on the dash of our motorhome. Press the button and a confident and manly voice announces "That Was Easy."

After a day of travel in the motorhome we press the button to hear "That Was Easy" and after backing into a tight campsite we again press the button. We have driven across deserts and back road in our Honda CR-V and once home we just have to press the button.

I am reminded when we bought our first motorhome and hit the road fulltime almost seven years ago it was "not" easy. Our first night of fulltiming was also the very first night we had ever spent in a motorhome so everything was new to us. Parking in a campsite often took two or three moves (attempts) and when we hooked up and unhooked water, electric and sewer we had to go slow and make sure everything was right.

The first time I drove the motorhome I was not bashful as I immediately pulled on an interstate highway, in a large city, with major highway construction and rush-hour traffic. I am a confident and relaxed driver, but the first time in a motorhome was not easy. The first time we got behind a slow dump truck (35 mph) I told Linda we'll just follow the truck because I don't want to pass it. But after a couple of miles I got my confidence up and passed that sucker. The first time we towed our Honda CR-V we merged into interstate traffic, crossed a bridge and drove through a major city. Again, it was not easy, but we made the drive OK without causing injury to either the motorhome or CR-V.

After seven years of traveling fulltime and stopping for the night 471 times it "is" easy now. We give no thought to parking in a site only inches wider and longer than the motorhome. We can do all the hookups with one hand tied behind our backs and one eye closed. City traffic and traffic construction only causes a yawn as we cross the country and mountain passes and narrow roads are now just beautiful scenery.

So if you are just getting started into RVing we suggest you get an Easy button and press it every time you complete a difficult task. Those tasks will soon become Easy.
