(or how NOT to see the USA) I am a night owl and while staying at Louisville Metro KOA the campground owner often picked me up in his golf cart between midnight and 1:00 a.m. We would ride out to the interstate and watch road construction, stop at nearby Tom Stinnett RV and talk to the security guard, talk to police on patrol and finally circle the campground doing a nightly security check. One night a police officer told us a pickup and fifth wheel had pulled into the KOA a few minutes after 1:00 a.m. so we hurried back. Sure enough, the couple in the RV was wanting a full hookup site but the campground was full. They were offered and gladly accepted a parking spot in an overflow area. After we parked them we asked why they were traveling so late. They had left Hayes, Kansas that morning and when they reached St. Louis, Missouri it was already dark, but Louisville was only 225 miles away so they pressed onward. They drove almost 800 miles that day. The KOA owner offered them a full hookup site the next morning but they were only staying one night and had to be in central Ohio the next day to visit family. Here is their story. They decided they wanted to see the USA and only had four weeks. One week before arriving in Louisville they had left southern California with their first stop in Las Vegas, Nevada. On their way to Reno they blew two tires on the fifth wheel and were stranded on the side of the road most of the day. From Reno they traveled to Yellowstone National Park, but it was snowing so they left and drove to Hayes, Kansas. After leaving Louisville they planned to visit Ohio, New York and Maine before driving down I- 95 to Florida. From Florida they were taking I-10 back to southern California. They were seeing the USA in four weeks. When they arrived in Louisville they were so exhausted they could hardy climb out of their truck and after going to bed at 2:00 a.m. they were back on the road five hours later. I know they did not see Illinois and Indiana because it was dark driving across I-64. I do not consider driving thousands of miles on interstates I-95 and I-10 as seeing the USA. I bet that couple gave up their planned trip after another week of exhaustive traveling and are now swearing they will never go RVing again. We are in our fifth year of fulltiming and we haven't seen all of the USA. If we traveled like that couple we would give it up. |
