See Ya' Down The Road

I'd Do It All Over Again

I was recently talking to an elderly man who was reflecting on his life. Tom was raised on a farm in Iowa and joined the Navy at the end of  World War II. He retired from the Navy and during his career he saw more of the world than most people see in a lifetime. After retiring he settled in Florida and built fiberglass boats, then worked for the US Postal Service and retired again.

Tom and his wife loved to travel so they bought a motorhome and began traveling around the USA. They bought a place in southern Alabama and continued to travel and volunteer their services to the Escapees RV Club.

Now their traveling days are over and they both have many health problems. Tom has had three knee replacements and is on oxygen 24 hours a day, but he still lives every day to the fullest.

He loves to talk about his Navy days and I could see a twinkle in his eyes as he showed me pictures of his career and explained each ship, aircraft and the helicopters he flew. Then he summed it up with a statement I will always remember. Tom said, "I have had a good life. I don't own much, but I have no regrets and I'd do it all over again."

After talking with Tom I slipped back into my motorhome and reflected on my life. I won't bore you with the details of my life but after thinking a while I came to the same conclusion - I'd do it all over again.

I feel sorry for people who made bad decisions during their lives and have regrets, but it is not too late to make changes. It is nice to reach the golden years and be able to say - I'd do it all over again.
