Tatted Lace

Norm's mother was very talented with needlework and always had some tatting handy. I was fascinated to see her hands fly with just a little shuttle of thread and loved seeing the beautiful lace coming out. When I asked her to show me how to tat she was as delighted to teach as I was to learn. Her method and patterns had been passed mother to daughter for generations and she told me that none of her descendants had expressed an interest. We sat for an hour or two as she showed me over and over how to do do the basic double stitch, then chain and ring. We were heading out of town for an extended trip so our time that day was limited. As we traveled, I practiced the stitches and mailed my samples back to her to show her my progress. She added a step and then mailed back to me. My mother-in-law taught me to tat via the mail! Now I think that is quite an accomplishment for both of us.

Over the next few years I made many things but did not take pictures before giving them as gifts. Two things I will continue to make in memory of mother-in-law are  lace edge pillow cases and cross bookmarks. Everyone who has ever visited my mother-in-law as well as those folks she went to visit, including church members and her doctor, received tatted crosses. It was her tradition to make the pillow cases for wedding gifts, one that I plan to follow.
