Pine Needle Baskets
| An almost free hobby - WOW! For someone
like me who is always into some craft, this was a real find. One day while
out walking in a campground I saw a man gathering pine needles. I had to
ask what he was going to do with them. When he showed me his miniature
baskets I could not believe he made them from the pine straw on the ground.
He showed a few basics to me and recommended a book, Pine Needle Basketry:
From Forest Floor to Finished Project by Judy Mofield Mallow. (Prim
Pines)
This book and I have made lots of baskets. I am self taught with most crafts via internet, books or just looking at something and trying to figure out how it was put together. Pine Needle baskets give an opportunity for unlimited design ideas. No two baskets will ever be the same and usually the basket takes on its own shape and "personality" as you go along. Best part - there are no rules and no right or wrong ways to make a basket. However, living full time in an RV does limit just how many baskets I keep once completed. My family and friends have all received baskets, I have sold baskets and have a number either on display or used for various purposes in our motorhome. We are not always in an area that has the really long pine needles that I like to use for my baskets, so when we make a stop I am usually looking at the trees. Norm has helped me gather pine needles all over the US and a couple of times when we just stopped for a 15 minute break. I wash the needles adding a little bleach to dish water solution, rinse well and dry, then bundle them to store for the next time I have an urge to make a basket. I really appreciate Norm's help and support with my hobby interests. -Linda |
