See Ya' Down The Road

Our Actual Expenses and Monthly Budget

Before we hit the road fulltime we worked out a budget to see if we were financially able to retire at ages 54 and 49. Since then our budget has been revised each year and below is our latest monthly annual expenses and budget. Everyone's needs and desires are different so everyone's budget will be different. We chose not to see how cheap we can live - we chose to live a lifestyle of traveling and having a good time. We have a 2005 Dutch Star Diesel Pusher and a 1999 Honda CR-V. Both are paid for and the motorhome is registered through our LLC (Limited Lialibity Company) in Montana and the CR-V is registered in the State of Texas. It is hoped this will be a guideline for those either wanting to hit the road fulltime or those already fulltiming. Our expenses in year number six shows what happened when we had high medical expenses and paid of a daughter's wedding.Be sure to read the notes and the information at the bottom of the page.

Four times the first year we returned to Kentucky for emergencies, twice in the motorhome, once in the car and one time we flew. Those expenses are included in the first year's expenses. Also, the first year we purchased several items including a cell phone modem ($209) and a whole motorhome surge protection system with under / over voltage protection and remote monitor ($391), a whole-house water filter system and foam fire extinguishers.

The second year some of our unexpected expenses were a multi-purpose ladder ($315), new power steps ($388) and a computer aided telescope (over $600). We flew from Arizona to Kentucky to visit family one time and Linda flew from California to Kentucky for a funeral. Still, our expenses for the first two years totaled almost the same.

The third year we were in one campground for six months due to surgeries so our medical expenses increased and our fuel cost decreased. We spent $6,856.40 on one time items as follows: Hobbies, boat/motor ($1,512), metal detector ($211) and solar software program ($106); Computer/Internet, new laptop ($1,233), used laptop ($305) and computer parts ($120); Miscellaneous, solar panels and controller ($2,515), catalytic heater ($431), window sun screens ($350) and cell phone antenna ($73).

Our travels increased the fourth year as we traveled over 18,000 miles including two months in the Canadian Maritimes. We ate out often and did a lot of shopping. Some of the one time expenses we did not plan were Miscellaneous, camera, camera supplies, awning, furniture ($1,260); Hobbies, golf equipment ($395); Computer/Internet, new printer and supplies ($203); Maintenance, Honda CR-V windshield, motorhome alignment and tires, CR-V repair ($1,390). We also spend several thousand dollars on a Honda Reflex motor scooter, taxes and insurance, helmets, a lift on the motorhome and some other scooter related items. We did not put those expenses in the above chart.

During the fifth year we spent the first part of the winter in Florida and the rest in Arizona, Mexico and southern California. After a trip back east we returned to the Pacific coast following the Lewis and Clark Trail. We drove the motorhome 14,195 miles, drove the Honda CR-V 16,207 miles and rode the Honda Reflex motor scooter 1,607 miles. Our only big expenses of the year was four new AGM batteries ($720) and four new tires for the rear of the motorhome - $1,142, very inexpensive due to a super deal with Spartan Motors.

The sixth year we had high medical expenses and paid for a daughter's wedding. We stayed in campgrounds more, boondocked less and drove the motorhome less. Some of our major expenses were a new laptop computer, a Garmin GPS unit, new tires for the Honda CR-V and another $1,202 spent on the CR-V getting it ready for another 100,000 miles. We bought a new motorhome but the price of the motorhome, additions to the new motorhome and registering it are not included in the above monthly figures.

Our seventh year was a normal year of fulltiming with no high unexpected expenses. We did fly from Arizona to Kentucky two times for week-long stays and that drove up our Emergency / Travel Expenses. Fuel prices were high but we drove less to offset that expense.

Linda bought a sewing computer and accessories (over $4000) during our eighth year. Other purchases included a new laptop computer and printer, an air card and WiFi router and a digital camera. Our medical expenses were higher than normal. We bought a new 2007 Honda CR-V and a baseplate and wiring for towing. The price of the CR-V and set up for towing is not included in our actual expenses.
