Great River Road - Wrap-up Report

The Great River Road - Wrap-up Report

On May 14, we arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana to begin our travels on the Great River Road up the Mississippi River. Actually, the designated Great River Road runs on both sides of the river. Many people travel the road from north to south, but we chose the other direction for two reasons. 1) We were already in the south and 2) The month of May can be cold in northern Minnesota and July is hot in the south so we chose to follow the weather as it warmed up during our trip.

Gloria (my sister) and Don Martin traveled with us in their Winnebago Journey as they have done on other trips. It is nice when family is also best friends and we get along perfectly.

The trip actually began 80 miles south of New Orleans where the Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of Mexico and ended at Lake Itasca, Minnesota, the source of the river. During the trip we tried to stay away from large cities and spend time in small river communities, and we skipped many places we had visited before. We also ate our way up river as we found many small Mom and Pop type restaurants that served delicious home-cooked meals at very low prices.

Below is a table with statistics of our trip.
